Never one to be shy about showing off my skivvies, my love for lingerie runs deep. With lace coordinates being my go-to I became accustomed to spending $100+ per set. I equate a matching lingerie set with wearing red polish on your toes - no one needs to see it, but knowing you have it on makes you feel sexier and more confident and what woman doesn't want that extra boost of confidence?
Any "made for comfort" pair of underwear I had were specifically made for athletic use. Another reason I don't have "comfy" underwear is because of the retailers I frequent. Most of the shopping I do is at small local boutiques that specialize in North American made garments and when it comes to undergarments that usually means Sokoloff and Fortnight, Canadian brands specializing in lace and mesh sets.
Neither can I bring myself to enter the labyrinth that is Victoria Secret anymore due to their overwhelmingly wide range of selection. Something about trying to buy underwear as an adult seems off-putting when you can a lacy thong at the same place you can buy cotton briefs with "SWAG" spelled out in rhinestones.
When I was gifted two pairs of MeUndies (one cheeky brief, one bikini) I was skeptical at first: Where's the lace? Why is there so much fabric? What do you mean there is no matching bra? Why is the waistband so thick?
Despite my skepticism, I decided to give MeUndies a chance because of the company's dedication to transparency.
MeUndies is made out of eco-friendly Modal, a fibre created from the wood pulp of beechwood trees. These trees are extremely resistant and propagate on their own with no artificial irrigations or additional plant required. Modal is known for its soft hand, breathability and crease and pill resistant properties.
The fabric is also made in a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified textile manufacturer, with a strict set of guidelines. GOTS insures that harsh chemicals that are linked to life threatening diseases and birth defects are banned from their factories to keep their workers and the consumer safe. There are also strict protocols in place concerning water waste treatments and social criteria, such as safe working conditions, no discrimination and no child labour. Each stage of the textile supply change must be independently certified ensuring the consumer that their items were made sustainably.
Truth be told, it's been a long time since I've worn underwear aimed more towards function instead of fashion and wearing a pair for comfort was a welcomed change. The wide waistband kept them in place, even when worn under nylons no readjustments required! I found them to lay flat under my more fitted clothing and they were almost seamless. The wider waistband also doesn't bind or dig in and left no marks on my delicate little muffin top. Never in my adult life have I worn a pair so cozy. It was as if I had been running in high heels my entire adult life and someone just gave me a pair of sneakers. Its lightweight fabric was stretchy without being constricting and cool to the touch.
Men can choose between boxer briefs, trunks, boxers and regular briefs while women have their pick between cheeky briefs, bikini cut, boy short and thongs. Another huge selling point of MeUndies that I feel like they don't advertise enough is their wide ranges of sizes available. Men styles are available in S to 3XL, women in XS to 2XL making MeUndies one of the more affordable undergarments line for a diverse range of body types.
Colours range from your classics (blacks, grey, navy), to your bolds (mint, magenta, tangerine) and your adventurous (limited edition prints).
Women pairs start at $16 USD, men at $20 USD with discounts available through purchasing subscriptions or bundles. (It may also be the only time it's ever saved you money by purchasing the women version.) Shipping is free within Canada and the U.S.
While this may seem more expensive than your standard mall franchise "5 for $25" underwear when you take into account the high quality fabric and sustainability factor you'll see that the MeUndies pros far exceed their cheaper counterparts. One is like a meal at a nice sit-down restaurant, the other is meant to be purchased in multiples like off a value menu and should not be compared.
Subscriptions are available with easy cancellation and flexible options to change the colour, size, or style before they charge your card monthly. Subscribing will save you about 20% per pair and opting to skip a month is as easy as a click of a button - no calls to customer service required! The best part? They email you a preview before you charge your card which is a nice reminder to cancel if you want to opted out or to know exactly what's coming your way.
Does MeUndies have that va-va-voom factor that I usually seek out in undergarments? Not necessarily. They're much plainer than I am familiar with, however they do have a sexy casual lounging factor to them that I can appreciate. At the end of the day, sexiness is a state of mind, not a garment of clothing and what's sexier than someone feeling comfortable? MeUndies is ideal for those who like to keep cozy and have access to a wide range of selection. If you're looking for underwear that is ethically produced with sustainable materials then look no further, MeUndies has you—and your bum—covered.
